A Smile Sounds Good

Updated: Nov 3, 2019

What is more powerful? We smile after that first kiss, at couples getting married, at little babies and puppies, or when our favorite team wins a big game. And yes, we smile when we get a bonus or a pay raise.

When you smile, others smile back. It creates an instant emotional bond between humans. It brings out the best in our souls, and promotes positivity and overall well being.

People think smiling is just visual. It is not. A smile doesn’t just change your appearance, it changes the tone of your voice. A person on the other end of a phone call can detect it. They can literally tell the difference between a person smiling and a person who is merely speaking.

When you meet someone face to face, don’t you smile and shake hands? So why, when we call a potential client, do we not do the same? I preach this hidden power to my staff. You should smile and have a good time on every call. It will help your workday go by faster, and allow you to enjoy your job instead of just going through the motions. Most importantly, it will help you bond and close more deals. Who knows, you may even end up with a few extra friends in the process.

Just be forewarned, you can’t fake emotions. Many people like myself can detect it. You’ve seen a person who is faking a smile. It looks terribly difficult and can come across condescending. It can bring out the opposite of what you are trying to accomplish.

Make sure that when you smile, you mean it. If you are not the type of person who smiles a lot, figure out how. Being confident and positive about yourself, your company, and your future is critical in life and business.

As you learn how to use this talent, you will find all kinds of neat things happening in your world. In business, that usually translates into a much larger paycheck, which always brings...you guessed it...a smile!
